LPG

Introduction

Unlike LNG, which is primarily methane that must be stored at extremely low temperatures (-260°F), LPG is primarily propane, which can be stored at a much higher temperature (-56°F). Although the main gas compound is different, the key issues for safe storage and transportation for both gases in the liquefied form are storage temperature and the containment system.

ABS is uniquely qualified to review LPG vessel configurations. Our major LPG differentiators include:

• Extensive experience with all types of liquid gas containment systems, including the Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries, Co., Ltd's. ( IHI) Self-supporting, Prismatic-Shape, IMO Type-B tank system or SPB. ABS has classed the only LNG carriers to use the SPB containment system and also classed the first LPG FSO newbuild, the Escravos, which was fitted with SPB tanks. The Escravos LPG FSO is in service for ChevronTexaco offshore Nigeria.
• ABS classed the world’s first newbuild LPG FPSO, Sanha, also fitted with SPB tanks.

• Design review of cargo tanks, refrigeration and reliquefaction plants
• Assessment of turret and moorings (for FPSO and FSO vessels)
