Ship Operations - FPSOs and FSUs Discharges

Based on a proposal by Greenpeace International, the MEPC agreed to consider under its work program a review of MARPOL 73/78 Annex I in order to clarify the extent to which all of the provisions apply to floating production/storage and/or offloading units (FPSOs and FSUs). Presently, the discharge of offshore processing drainage, production water and gravity separation from oil/gas product is exempted from the discharge requirements of Annex I for such units. Also, the requirements for segregated ballast, crude oil washing and double hull protection are not applicable to FPSOs and FSUs when operating on site.
