Ballast Water Management - Port State Provisions

The resolution recommends that Port States disseminate information on (1) the details of their requirements for ballast water management and treatment requirements including any contingency arrangements; (2) location and terms of use of alternative ballast exchange zones should ballast exchange not be capable of being accomplished in deep open oceans due to safety reasons; (3) the availability, location and capacities of reception facilities for ballast water and/or ballast sediment; and (4) any research carried out with respect to the impact and control of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens.

Port States are allowed to exempt ships entering their jurisdictional waters from the requirements.
