Stability Issues

Location of the Collision Bulkhead

To provide for greater consistency in determining the placement of the collision bulkhead from the forward perpendicular as per SOLAS Regulation II-1/10, the MSC approved a definition for the "forward perpendicular" as contained in the new MSC/Circ.854. 8.13

Revised Stability Code

IMO Resolution A.749(18) -- the Intact Stability Code -- which contains a consolidation of recommended criteria for all types of vessels, was revised by Resolution MSC 75(69) in a number of areas. Included are revisions to incorporate:

  • stability calculations carried out by computer;
  • minimum stability for tankers during loading and unloading operations;
  • free surface calculations;
  • detailed guidance for conducting inclining experiments; as well as
  • several clarifications to the text of A.749(18).

Stability and Loading Programs

To facilitate the development of new stability and loading programs which effectively consider the vulnerabilities and potential human errors that arise during operations, MSC/Circ.854 was approved. The Circular contains recommendations on data format and protection, program functionality and documentation control. 8.2

New Damage Stability Requirements

The Explanatory Notes for evaluating the subdivision and probabilistic damage stability requirements contained in SOLAS Regulation II-1/B-1 for ships >100m has been extended to cover all cargo ships >80m by new Resolution MSC 76(69). This size of ship, if constructed on or after 1 July 1998, is required to meet the degree of subdivision for 100m ships reduced based on a ratio of the ship's length to a length of 100m. 8.3

( + Note: All "ships" are all self propelled vessels)
