Types of Careers at ABS

Engineers

ABS Engineers provide expertise on a variety of maritime subjects, including the safety and viability of vessel and offshore designs, as well as contributing to a body of stringent standards called ABS Rules that promote the safety of life and property at sea. Their behind-the-scenes work often includes groundbreaking research using state-of-the-art methods and facilities.

ABS Engineering candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or Ocean Engineering. They are Naval Architects, Civil Engineers, Ocean Engineers or Structural Engineers who conduct plan approval within our Engineering departments, Floating Structures and Fixed Platform Offshore Engineering Groups. Related mechanical experience and/or pressure vessel experience from the marine, offshore, energy, or automotive industry is desired to review and approve drawings for electrical, mechanical, piping system & statutory items such as SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag requirements for oil/product carrier, chemical carrier, bulk carrier, container carrier, LNG Carrier, LPG Carrier, Offshore Projects and Navy vessels. Provide technical support & analysis for shafting systems, shaft alignment, & marine engines of commercial vessels and navy vessels.

Surveyors

ABS Surveyors, stationed at ports around the globe, are experienced marine engineers who, during construction and repair, evaluate vessels and offshore platforms to ABS Rules. Their judgment and wisdom, coupled with a broad knowledge of maritime conditions, help assure the integrity of a wide variety of maritime vessels and projects.

The primary function of a Field Surveyor is to examine and report on vessels and other marine structures during and after construction relative to compliance with the applicable requirements for maintaining the vessel or oil rig in Classification with ABS and meeting associated statutory and special service requirements related to Safety of Life at Sea, Loadline, Tonnage, Cargo Gear etc.
