ABS Elects New Board, Council and Committee Members

April 15, 2008

(New York, NY---) The Council of ABS today elected two new board members following the classification society’s Annual Meeting of Members in New York. Joining the ABS Board are Choo Chiau Beng (C.B.), Chairman and CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine and Elizabeth D. Whitaker, a prominent Dallas attorney. The new members represent an enlargement of the ABS Board from 13 to 15 Directors.

Two well known members of the maritime community were elected as life-time Emeritus Members of the ABS Council at the society’s Annual Meeting. They are William O. Gray of Gray Maritime Co. and Basil C. Scarvelis of Trident Maritime Agency, Inc.

Additionally, the following ABS Members were elected to 3 year terms as members of the ABS Council:

Newly elected to the ABS Technical Committee are:

  • RDML James A. Watson, U.S. Coast Guard

The ABS Technical Committee is the body of leading industry representatives that conducts the final review of all proposed changes to the ABS Rules prior to their being presented to the ABS Rules Committee for formal adoption.

“Classification is the principal self regulating mechanism for the marine and offshore industries,” said ABS Chairman & CEO Robert D. Somerville. “Input from industry is a vital part of our efforts to develop and implement technically sound and practically applicable standards that promote the safety of life, property and the natural environment. That guidance is provided by our members, by the members of our various national and regional committees, through our technical committee structure and by our Council and Board. Every individual within this broad membership network is selected to reflect the entire spectrum of industry interests, each eminent in their particular field.”
