Cold Region Shipping Activity Increases
Seminar In Design Requirements For Ice Class Ships

June 12, 2007

(Houston, TX) There has been an upsurge of shipping activity in cold regions, covering transportation, resource exploration and research.  The recent adoption of the IMO Guidelines for Ships in Ice-Covered Waters and the forthcoming implementation of the IACS Unified Requirements for Polar Class Ships provide a new framework for design and operation. With this growing interest class society ABS in conjunction with BMT Fleet Technology will conduct a seminar “Design Requirements for Ice Class Ships” in Houston, TX, USA, August 14-16, for those involved in ship specification, design and operation.

The course is designed to impart state-of-the-art knowledge and to provide practical examples of realistic applications.  While the emphasis of the course is on the hull and propulsion systems, other aspects will also be addressed such as:   ice classes and regulatory regimes, route planning, risk analysis approach for ice issues, ice load models for structural design, propulsion system design and powering alternatives.

The three day seminar is being conducted by recognized experts within the ABS Corporate Technology Department as well as BMT Fleet Technology and the Memorial University of Newfoundland.  BMT has long been recognized as a leading center of research in ice and structures.

ABS’ pioneering ice class research on nonlinear finite element analysis of side structures subject to ice loads led to comprehensive Guidance Notes on Ice Class issued by the society in 2005.  The Notes provide direct calculation procedures for designing ice strengthened vessels operating in the Baltic Sea by addressing three principal elements in ice strengthening design: alternative side structures, minimum propulsion power requirements and strength of the propeller. These are considered the key factors in determining the ability of a vessel to operate safely in ice filled waters.

Founded in 1862, ABS is a leading international classification society devoted to promoting the security of life, property and the marine environment through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.

BMT Fleet Technology Limited is a member of BMT Limited, a leading multi-disciplinary engineering and technology consultancy.  For over thirty years, BMT has provided practical solutions to engineering problems and advances in technical knowledge through applied research, experimentation, design and engineering analysis.
