T he Society of Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) has launched a major initiative to review and revise the International Code for the Construction and Equipment for Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk. The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), of which ABS is a member, has a representative on the steering group developing recommendations for revision. Jim Gaughan, of Gaughan & Associates and consultant to ABS, will represent class societies in the 14-member group. The new code is on schedule to be approved, adopted and implemented in five years.
This is the first time the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has handed over the revision of an IMO document to an outside entity. It was agreed that SIGTTO has the greatest understanding of gas carrier construction and shipping and is best positioned to develop the recommended revisions.
