ABS Classes Trio of Q-Flex LNG Carriers T hree ABS classed Q-Flex LNG carriers built at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s (DSME) Okpo Shipyard were recently named in a joint ceremony. The AL AAMRIYA, MURWAB, and FRAIHA each have a cargo carrying capacity of 211,000m3.
These three vessels are part of a group of eight which are jointly owned by the J5 consortium, comprised of MOL, NYK, K-Line, Mitsui and IINO Lines, and Nakilat, Qatar Gas Transport Company. J5 are the operators of the vessels. In total the DSME shipyard will build 26 of the 54 LNG vessels in the Nakilat fleet. According to ABS’ Port Principal Surveyor-in-Charge, Koje, Brian Barton, ABS was recognized for its outstanding service during the construction of the ships. ABS Senior Surveyor Seong-Hun Kim received a plaque from S.T. Nam, President and CEO of DSME during the ceremonies. Kim served as project manager for the trio of vessels. The vessels are built with the GTT No. 96 membrane system, have five cargo tanks, twin slow speed heavy fuel burning diesel engines and a twin skeg aft body arrangement with an onboard reliquefaction plant that can handle cargo boil off gas. ABS has developed advanced analytical tools for structural analysis and fatigue evaluations specifically customized for membrane type LNG carriers. ABS software and methodology for carrying out sloshing analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to calculate pressures imposed by LNG under various filling limits for North Atlantic environmental conditions has been seen by industry as the most advanced programming available.
