ABS has been awarded the contracts for the first jackup drilling rigs to be built
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
A total of four units will be built to ABS standards: two units for Thule Drilling ASA and two

Having classed the first offshore LNG deepwater port buoy for Excelerate’s
Energy Bridge Deepwater Port in the Gulf of Mexico, ABS has class contracts on four more buoys:

The hull of the Independence Hub
arrives from the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore to Gulf Marine Fabricators in Corpus Christi, Texas,
to continue work on the platform. Shown here the hull was successfully offloaded from the Mighty Servant 3,
an open deck heavy lift vessel from Dockwise that can move cargoes weighing up to 25,000 tons.

At the recent 25 th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics
and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2006) in Hamburg, Germany, ABS Manager of Technology and Business
Development, Arturo Revenga, presented a paper “Design Aspects of Winterized
and Arctic LNG Carriers: A Classification Perspective.”
With vast reserves of oil and gas expected to be exploited in the Russian Arctic,
including the Barents Sea, much interest is being taken in the unique demands placed upon vessels
operating in the Arctic region. Revenga summarizes the latest classification technology initiatives
to support the development of standards for the design, construction and maintenance of an LNG carrier
operating in a harsh cold weather environment.

With the largest attendance since 1982, nearly 60,000 people attended the world’s premiere oil and gas show in Houston, TX, the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).
Kicking off the opening day topical lunch sessions was ABS President and Chief Operating Officer Robert E. Kramek with “Safe Development of the Energy Frontier”.
And ABS’ Director of Corporate Operational Safety & Evaluation Chris Serratella chaired a session on Structural Integrity Management of Fixed and Floating Structures. Serratella was also a co-author of the paper Flexible Approaches to Risk-Based Inspection of FPSOs (OTC 18364).
