Mexico Bustles with Offshore Activity

ABS Country Manager for Mexico Paul DeLaire reports high levels of construction activity in Mexico in support of the busy offshore rig market.   One of the five Scorpion Offshore jackups building in Brownsville, Texas, the Offshore Intrepid, is having modules built at Construcciones Mecanicas Monclova S.A. de C.V. (COMMSA) in Tampico, Mexico.  The module fabrication is being overseen by ABS with completion date for late November.

In support of the hectic building going on in Tampico, SWECOMEX, the largest industrial construction, retail and services conglomerate in Latin America, is building an offshore quarters and warehouse for additional fabrication space.

Also at the Bender Shipyard in Tampico, DeLaire reports the construction of two hulls for Lonestar Drilling Nigeria Ltd.   The hulls will be for the Lonestar Barge 203 and Lonestar Barge 204 slated to work in the rivers of Nigeria.  These inland barges previously were in service in Venezuela’s Lake Maracaibo.  Lonestar is refurbishing the barges in New Iberia, Louisiana.  Once the hulls are constructed in Mexico they will be attached to each barge increasing its draft from14 feet to 23 feet.
