BS has opened a new regional headquarters
in Doha, Qatar, further strengthening its ties |
to the Middle Eastern energy sector, particularly in its support
of increasing production and shipment of liquefied natural gas
(LNG) from Qatar.
By 2015, the LNG fleet will include at least 325 ships,
many of which will be assigned to carry gas from Qatar’s
Ras Laffan project and other Middle Eastern producers. The
new Doha headquarters strategically places ABS to offer and
expand its regional services, says Roger Shimmin, vice president
of Middle Eastern Region, ABS Europe.

A significant fleet of ABS-classed offshore support vessels already
operates within the Middle East, allowing ABS’ existing Dubai
office to continue its survey services to clients and shipyards
in the region, says Antonio Lino Costa, president of ABS Europe.
“The new location strategically positions us to better serve
our oil and gas clients while still providing the attention and
survey service our shipping clients in the region have come to rely
upon and trust,” he said.
Responding to the developing market, ABS has increased its share
of the LNG carrier fleet. Shimmin reports that 20 percent of the
current LNG orderbook is classing to ABS standards.
“We’ve been deeply involved in the development of
new designs, some of which represent a near doubling in size. We
have addressed the technical challenges posed by these new very
large designs, particularly with respect to fatigue life and sloshing
within membrane cargo tanks,” said Shimmin.
