BS has become the first classification society accepted for associate membership in the Society of International Gas
Tanker & Terminal Operators (SIGTTO), opening the door
for ABS to support SIGTTO’s mission of enhancing the safety and operational reliability of gas tankers and terminals. SIGTTO is a not-for-profit international organization.

“SIGTTO provides a forum for shared experience and professional exchange of technical information. ABS is honored to be a part of this organization. We look forward to contributing our technical knowledge of LNG carriers, offshore terminals and gas transport technology toward continued improvement of safety and operational standards,” said William J. Sember, ABS vice president of Energy Development.

Originally formed with 13 members in 1979, SIGTTO has grown to a membership of more than 100 companies which represent virtually the entire world’s LNG trades and more than half its liquefied petroleum gas capacity, reports James MacHardy, general manager of SIGTTO.

“We have added a new membership dimension to SIGTTO by approving the associate membership of a classification society. This addition further diversifies and strengthens our organization’s membership while providing us with a strong technical resource to respond to increased demand for LNG,” said MacHardy.

New and larger LNG carriers, coupled with the development of offshore LNG terminals to accommodate increased demand, have placed classification societies like ABS at the forefront of establishing standards and providing third-party verification to support industry in the safe development of emerging technologies, says Sember.

He adds that technical issues such as structural design, propulsion, vessel performance and terminal compatibility associated with the next generation of LNG carriers are being addressed right now by class societies.

“A forum like SIGTTO provides ABS with the opportunity to gather feedback and learn from operators so practical maintenance and operational concerns are considered during the classification Rule-making process,” said Sember.
