New LNG/LPG Niche LNG FPSO Concept Receives ABS Review
ABS continues to be at the forefront of technical standards for gas production at sea and transport technologies with its Approval In Principle (AIP) of a novel concept from ABB Lummus Global for a liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, floating production, storage and offloading unit (Niche LNG/LPG FPSO).

The equipment layout is similar to a typical FPSO, however, the concept for this new purpose-built FPSO allows for two separate gas processing facilities onboard which can accommodate the extraction and transport of heavier gases, propane and butane, as well as lighter natural gas, methane.

ABS Establishes Additional Survey Offices in Cameroon and Brazil
ABS opened an office in Douala, Cameroon and increased staff numbers in Angola to expand its geographic coverage of the region and exceed survey delivery expectations.

In West Africa approximately 280 offshore supply vessels, 35 drilling units and 15 FPSOs operate to ABS Class. Under discussion are a number of new FPSO projects scheduled to come on line in the next few years.

ABS has opened a station in Macae, Brazil. This location, approximately 200 kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro, is the major hub for upstream development in Brazil.

ABS Advises on the Role Of Class in the Design, Operation & Construction of LNG Ships and Terminals
ABS Vice President of Energy Development, William J. Sember, will participate in the upcoming international conference and exhibition for the LNG, LPG and natural gas industries, Gastech 2005, during the technical session titled, “Safety and Training for Ships and Terminals.” Gastech is March 14-17 in Bilbao, Spain.

Currently ABS has 28 LNG carriers on order to its classification in shipyards in Korea, Japan and China. Four of the orders will be outfitted with Wartsila dual fuel engines with electric propulsion. ABS has available for free download its Guide for Design and Installation of Dual Fuel Engines.

ABS Participates in CWC's LNG 2005 Conference
ABS Vice President Energy Development William J. Sember will speak on "The Dynamics of LNG Shipping" at the CWC Group's LNG 2005 Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, April 12-14. The workshop session, to be led by ABS, will feature a case study by major energy operator, ConocoPhillips, class society perspective on technical issues surrounding LNG fleet and general fleet trends and observations. Some of the world’s leading offshore projects are classed by ABS. ABS leads offshore classification/certification with 47 percent of all floating production vessels and 72 percent of the world fleet of mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs) operating to its class.
