Jackup Orders Approaching 40
ABS Supports Strong Offshore Market

With gas demand soaring, the construction of new offshore jackup rigs to handle the demand for shallow-water drilling is at an all time high. Many of the rigs are slated to operate in the Gulf of Mexico to serve as a major source of natural gas for the United States. Updating our story from last edition, ABS continues to capture the majority share of the jackup classification contracts, with orders now nearing 40.

The 24 units on order or under construction to ABS class reported in June has now increased to 34 with several orders pending with shipyards in Singapore, China and the USA building these specialized drilling units to ABS standards.

Further offshore activity updates include six semisubmersibles on order to ABS class in Singapore as well as ABS involvement with 23 floating production projects (FPSOs, TLPs and Spars) worldwide, according to ABS Vice President of Energy Development William J. Sember.

ABS Pacific Management and Survey staff attend the keel laying for a Keppel Fels Mod-V, Super B Class Jackup rig in Singapore. The rig will be classed by ABS and receive the notations: XA1 SEDU, XCDS. The Certified Drilling System or CDS notation indicates owners have opted for ABS’safety case or risk-based analysis approach to certification rather than the stand alone application of traditional prescriptive rules.

The maximum water depth for the jackup is 350 feet with its maximum drilling capacity at a depth of 35,000 feet. The “Deep Driller 3” is scheduled for delivery in 2006.

This is one of the nearly 40 jackup contracts ABS has received in the past few months. ABS’ market share for rig classification is around 76 percent of the worldwide rig fleet.
