With gas demand soaring, the construction of new offshore jackup rigs to handle
the demand for shallow-water drilling is at an all time high. Many of the rigs
are slated to operate in the Gulf of Mexico to serve as a major source of natural
gas for the United States. Updating our story from last edition, ABS continues
to capture the majority share of the jackup classification contracts, with orders
now nearing 40. Read more.

Notable column stabilized drilling
unit semi-submersible newbuilds have been awarded to ABS. Two
ultra-deepwater semis for SeaDrill Ltd are to be built at the
Jurong Shipyard, Singapore, based on a Friede & Goldman
design and to ABS classification standards. The rigs will be
capable of drilling in water depth of up to 10,000 ft. and
are scheduled for delivery in 2008 and 2009.

OPE’s Satellite Service Platforms (SSPs) offer remote control production
processing of subsea wells in water depths to 10,000 feet. ABS provided its “Approval
in Principal” or AIP to OPE’s proprietary design. At the heart of
the design is a central column that can be raised and lowered offering motion
optimization, as well as chemical injection storage and additional space for
production process equipment. The SSP allows for close positioning to the subsea
wells and enhanced flow assurance due to minimized flowline lengths. |

The Atlantia SeaStar monohull TLP
design is the configuration of choice for BHP Billiton’s (BHPB) Neptune
oil and gas field development in the Gulf of Mexico some 120
miles off the coast of Louisiana. Having extensive experience
classing this particular design, ABS has been selected as the
classification society. Read

ABS Principal Engineer
Dr. Xiaozhi (Christina) Wang (left) presented the paper
"Fatigue Design
Factors and Safety Level Implied in Fatigue Design of Offshore
Structures" at the 24th International Conference
on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) held
in June. The paper discusses the application of Fatigue
Design Factors (FDFs) in assessing offshore structures
and reviews the application of FDFs in various Rules and
Guides.
ABS Americas Offshore Engineering Chief
Engineer Pao-Lin Tan and ABS Group Services do Brasil Engineer
Gerson Matter also presented a paper “Touchdown
Analysis of Jack-Up Units for the Definition of the Installation
and Retrieval Operational Limits”. |
