ABS Classing Semi-Submersibles for SeaDrill and Maersk Contractors

N otable column stabilized drilling unit semi-submersible newbuilds have been awarded to ABS. Two ultra-deepwater semis for SeaDrill Ltd are to be built at the Jurong Shipyard, Singapore, based on a Friede & Goldman design and to ABS classification standards. The rigs will be capable of drilling in water depth of up to 10,000 ft. and are scheduled for delivery in 2008 and 2009.

Additionally, two semis for Maersk Contractors to be built at Keppel FELS, Singapore, based on a proprietary Keppel and Marine Structure Consultants design will also be built to ABS class. The DSS 21 design can operate in up to 10,000 feet of water and will be outfitted for operations in benign waters. The rigs are in response to the growing market for deepwater production drilling in areas such as offshore West Africa, Brazil, Gulf of Mexico or Southeast Asia.
