Second Derrick/Pipelay Vessel for Global Industries

A second $250 million new generation dynamically positioned combination Derrick/Pipelay vessel will be constructed by Global Industries to ABS classification Rules. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in April 2011, just one year after its first vessel, the Global 1200.

According to ABS Project Manager Lynnda Pekel, the vessel is equipped with DP-2 capabilities allowing it to support deepwater activities. The Global 1201 is a multi-purpose construction vessel designed for work in both deep and shallow water. At 587 feet overall length, the vessel will have a state-of-the-art pipelay system capable of operating in water depths up to 10,000 ft. and able to handle concrete coated pipe up to 60 inches in diameter. A 1,200 metric ton capacity crane is also provided for conventional platform installations.

When the Global 1201 is delivered, it will join four other new state-of-the-art vessels added to the Global fleet since 2006.

Did You Know?

Dynamic positioning (DP) systems allow a vessel to maintain its position and heading by using its own propellers or thrusters. ABS has various notations for the level of redundancy in the DP system. Notations are available for DPS-0, DPS-1, DPS-2 and DPS-3.
