ABS BRINGS RISK-BASED INSPECTION TO OFFSHORE WEST AFRICA

Todd Grove
Vice President, ABS Europe

isk-Based Inspection (RBI), an alternative to prescriptive inspection rules, can be
used to help optimize inspection resources and procedures. As projects off the coast of West Africa proliferate, industry operators are recognizing the value of specific applications of this methodology, says Todd Grove, Vice President, ABS Europe – Western Region.

“When properly applied, these methods allow West Africa operators to develop a rational basis for setting inspection intervals and logical, focused work scopes,” said Grove.

Grove will present current developments in RBI techniques at PennWell’s eighth annual Offshore West Africa Conference (OWA), March 17-19, in Abuja, Nigeria. The conference accommodates more than 700 participants from more than 20 countries. Grove’s presentation, titled “Practical Development and Implementation of Risk Based Inspection Techniques Offshore West Africa,” is scheduled for the Floating Technology session on Thursday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m.

Grove’s presentation at the OWA conference will demonstrate practical applications of the new ABS Guide for Surveys Using Risk-Based Inspection for the Offshore Industry. ABS RBI methodology moves structural system inspection planning from a prescriptive approach based upon traditional ship practice to one based upon asset-specific information and the uniqueness of each installation. For floating installations off the West African coast, ABS techniques of RBI can be applied logically to the hull and mooring systems, says Grove.

The hull and mooring inspection plans detailed in Grove’s presentation focus on enhancing safety and minimizing the likelihood of environmental impact while simultaneously containing operating costs and meeting corporate, local, regulatory and class requirements.
