Atlantis Rises

An ABS management and engineering team participates in the steel-cutting ceremony for the new BP semisubmersible Atlantis, under construction at the Daewoo Shipyard in South Korea. Classed by ABS as an XA1 Floating Offshore Installation (FOI), the unit will advance the development of the Atlantis Field, located approximately 125 miles south of New Orleans on Green Canyon Block 743 in approximately 6,500 feet of water.

Principal Surveyor Zibi Puwalski, Project Manager Brian Barton, and Principal Engineer Joel Rosenstein mark the commencement of the project with a ceremony which includes a formal “button-push” in the shipyard’s steel plate shop.

In addition to classification services, ABS is coordinating the regulatory review of the unit’s design, construction and installation with the US Coast Guard (USCG) and the US Minerals Management Service (MMS). The Atlantis semisubmersible production facility has a gross design capacity of approximately 150,000 barrels of oil per day and 180 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.
