A Publication of ABS Energy Project Development

Regional Focus: ABS Participates in Expansion of Southeast Asia Development

BS is providing classification services to Unocal and its Unocal Makassar Ltd. subsidiary for the next phase in the company’s development of the West Seno Field, located in the deep
waters off East Kalimantan, Indonesia. ABS will class a second tension leg platform (TLP), West Seno B, reports Ian Simpson, ABS Manager of Energy Project Development.

“Unocal is currently considering bids for the construction and installation of TLP-B, with ABS selected to provide classification services from the very beginning to streamline the process,” said Simpson.

ABS classed Unocal’s West Seno TLP-A in early 2003, becoming the first TLP in Southeast Asia and the first well of a 28-well drilling program.

In classing the TLPs, ABS is determining the structural and mechanical fitness of the facilities. ABS also has classed a floating production unit (FPU) for the project. TLP-A is located 300 to 500 feet from the FPU, and TLP-B will be located two to three miles away. Produced fluid is routed to the FPU from TLP-A via multiphase flexible flowlines and from TLP-B via steel catenary risers and rigid intrafield pipelines.

The ABS-classed FPU supports full separation and fluid treatment systems, utilities, pumps, compression systems, a control power distribution unit, drain systems and a ballast system. The FPU exports stabilized oil and gas streams via newly installed separate pipelines approximately 38 miles to the Santan terminal in East Kalimantan.

The process facilities for oil and water are designed as a single train for peak rates of 60,000 barrels per day of oil and 40,000 barrels per day of water. The gas facilities consist of three export compression trains designed for 150 million standard cubic feet per day of produced gas and 20 million standard cubic feet per day of gas lift.

Unocal anticipates future development of eight more offshore fields in the area, including: Bangka Channel, 2005; Ranggas, 2006; Merah Besar, 2007; Gehem, 2008; Gendalo, 2010; Gandang, 2013; and Gada and Gula, 2013.
