ABS Key Sponsor As SNAME and ASME Join Forces to Host
First Annual International Offshore Design Competition for Students

ISODC Web Site
he Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) join
forces to host the 2002 International Offshore Design competition for students. The competition promotes interest and awareness for career opportunities in the offshore market sector as well as naval architecture and marine, ocean & mechanical engineering. ABS Offshore is a sponsor of the event.
Students work in teams of no more than six individuals plus a faculty sponsor. Industry participates in this event through a mentorship program where students can email company representatives with problems or questions. The process aims at developing an appreciation for the offshore design process and encourages interdisciplinary teamwork and collaborative effort. Designs are due June 28.

"The really exciting part of this competition is introducing students to the interesting and challenging opportunities that exist for them in the offshore sector," says John Filson, Chairman of the International Offshore Design Competition Planning Committee. "Unlike ship designs, nearly every offshore structure is a unique and innovative design, developed to conquer the many challenges that stem from working offshore." Filson says the competition gives students the chance to see these opportunities firsthand.

A panel of industry experts will select the top five project submissions to be finalists in the International Offshore Design Competition. The top five entries will be chosen based on:

Utility, relevance and general interest of the system designed to the Offshore Industry
Demonstrated grasp of the key design issues
System integration
Demonstrated teamwork
Quality of work in the technical summaries
Creativity of design.

Winners will be recognized for their outstanding work by the industry on September 15.

SNAME is an internationally recognized nonprofit, technical, professional society of individual members serving the maritime and offshore industries and their suppliers.

Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, today ASME International is a nonprofit educational and technical organization serving a worldwide membership of 125,000. The organization promotes the art, science and practice of mechanical engineering throughout the world.
