Floating Production Systems Need Clear Standards and Regulations

"Deeper water and global operations impose an international framework of safety standards, with classification playing a key role."
William Sember,
Vice President of
Offshore Development, ABS
BS Vice President of Offshore Development William J. Sember recently told
delegates at the Institute of Petroleum’s Annual Conference in London that the increased popularity of floating production systems for oil production has highlighted the absence of clear and internationally agreed upon standards for the design, construction and operation of hull structure, process equipment and mooring systems.

Sember says that today’s units are presently subjected to a myriad of regulations applied by different governments and suggested that classification provides the most practical, flexible and internationally acceptable system for the establishment of relevant technical standards for floating production systems. ABS is the leading provider of classification services for the offshore industry with more than 80 percent of the worldwide marketshare.
