ABS presenters Seah and Huang discussed mooring systems issues at PetroMin's Kuala Lumpur Conference
uilding on the theme “Opportunities and Challenges in the Asia-Pacific
Region,” ABS presented a technical paper, “Deepwater Mooring Solutions for FPSOs,” at PetroMin magazine's recent international Deepwater Technology Conference held in Kuala Lumpur.

Authored by Kenneth Huang, ABS Houston, and A.K. Seah, ABS Singapore, the paper presents general issues related to mooring systems for ship-shaped vessels such as Floating Production and Storage/Offloading units (FPSOs), with particular attention given to the effects of environmental phenomena. Winter storm systems in the northern North Sea and offshore Eastern Canada, hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and typhoons in the South China Sea have prompted concerns of regulatory bodies for the utilization of FPSOs, says Huang.

“We hope to assist designers enhance the reliability of FPSO mooring systems, thereby avoiding property loss and environmental damage,” he said.

The paper discusses wind, wave and current dynamics, outlines mooring design issues and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed options.

The conference also featured papers on offshore oil and gas development opportunities presented by representatives of the governments and/or national oil companies of Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
