apid advancements in gas transportation methods are
leading to significant size increases for liquified natural gas (LNG) terminals, LNG carriers and groundbreaking Liquefied Petroleum Gas Floating Production Storage and Offloading (LPG FPSO) vessels. Building on the momentum generated by Tokyo’s World Gas Conference, ABS recently held a seminar titled “Emerging Technology on Seaborne Transportation of Natural Gas” in Yokohama, Japan.
Says Akira Akiyama, Vice President, Technology and Business Development, ABS Pacific, “This is the first time ABS has given such an extensive overview of relevant technologies to gas industry representative in Japan.”

The ABS LNG Focus Group gave presentations addressing updated technology for seaborne gas transportation. Jim Gaughan, Staff Consultant, ABS New York, and Mumtaz Mahmood, Manager, Technology Development, ABS London, presented papers titled “Large LNG Carriers;” ”Offshore LNG Terminals;” and “CNG Carriers.” Ho Seong Lee, Staff Consultant, SafeHull Development, ABS Houston, discussed ABS research on sloshing for membrane LNG carriers.

“Participants showed a great deal of interest in general trends, cutting-edge assessment of installation systems and technology for large LNG carriers,” said Lee.

An informal reception following the seminar helped to establish immediate lines of personal communication, he added.

“We already have received several requests for the references quoted at the seminar and for additional explanations.”

The conference hosted 40 professionals from 17 Japanese companies representing various sectors, including LNG shipping companies, shipyards, trading houses, energy companies, media and others.
