INDUSTRY LOOKS CLOSER AT LPG FSOS
TO HARNESS GAS RESERVES

From an engineering standpoint, the Escravos LPG FSO was exceptional for its use of the IHI SPB containment system for its independent cargo tanks.

ne of the first purpose-built LPG FSOs, the Escravos LPG FSO, will
turn four in 2001 amid industry expectation that building for LPG FSOs could be set to increase. This is due, in part, to strong interest in FPSOs and new more compelling profit and regulatory motivations to extract gas as well as oil from wells. ABS has seen an increased number of proposals for LPG FSOs, many of them double the size of the Escravos LPG FSO which has storage capacity of 54,000 m3 LPG.

"The Escravos LPG FSO represents an outstanding project where safety and longevity provided the basis for design and construction decisions," said Charles Dunlap, ABS Principal Engineer, Tanker, Bulk Carrier & Ship Safety Group.

The Escravos LPG FSO, a Chevron project, can operate for 20 years without drydocking and is currently harvesting gas from two fields, Okan and Mefa, offshore of Nigeria.

From an engineering standpoint, the Escravos LPG FSO was exceptional for its use of the IHI SPB containment system for its independent cargo tanks. Also interesting was the permanent mooring of the installation, which is via an external turret system designed by SOFEC and built by Brown & Root. The turret incorporates the swivel connecting the gas import riser to the vessel.

For this project, ABS provided a full range of engineering design review, independent analyses and survey services. The vessel was built at IHI according to ABS Rules and incorporating components of the IGC Code, particularly the type B independent tank requirements. It has been operating successfully and safely off the coast of Nigeria since delivery.
