The 39th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) met 10 - 14 March 1997 at the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO’s) Headquarters in London. Significant progress was made towards the development of a final draft of the new Annex VI to MARPOL concerning air pollution prevention from ships which is scheduled to be adopted during the September 1997 Air Pollution Conference to be held at IMO in London. An overview of the air pollution requirements as well as other draft regulations tentatively accepted during MEPC 39 are summarized below.
