New Annex VI to Marpol - CO2 Emissions

A proposal by several Delegations to include in Annex VI requirements to limit CO2 emissions did not receive the necessary 2/3 support of Parties to MARPOL 73/78. However, it was agreed via a Conference Resolution that the adverse effects of CO2 emissions from ships should be studied by IMO in cooperation with Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The study should estimate CO2 emissions and address how emissions and their relative contribution to the global inventory of greenhouse gases may change in future years. The MEPC will also consider the feasibility of reduction strategies in light of the inverse relationship between CO2and NOX emissions.
