Passenger Ships

Fire Divisions

The fire class integrity requirements for main vertical zones and horizontal zones for certain low risk spaces fitted on ships built on/after 1 July 98 carrying more than 36 passengers have been revised to allow for a slight reduction in the minimum required fire class integrity.

However, certain penetrations of these divisions on passenger ships must be tested in accordance with the newly approved Fire Test Procedure Code.

Additionally, fire doors which are normally open at sea (excluding power-operated fire doors) and which are located in “A” class divisions are subject to new closing arrangement criteria.

Damage Stability Requirements

MSC-67 tentatively agreed, subject to final approval in June 97 at MSC68, that ships carrying more than 400 persons, other than ro-ro/passenger ships, shall meet the “1990 SOLAS” requirements for residual stability range and magnitude at intermediate and final stages of flooding after damage has been applied anywhere within the ship’s length.

The date of compliance is to be not later than the first renewal survey due date after the ship is 30yrs of age, or the following dates, which ever occurs later:

  X > 15001

1000 < X <1500

1 October 10

600 < X <1000

Additionally, MSC-68 will consider if the “1990 SOLAS” requirements should also be applied to other types of existing passenger ships.
