Ship Stability

Load Line Interpretations

A number of longstanding IACS Unified Interpretations for determining the minimum conditions of the ship’s arrangement -- including safe access on deck and freeing port area arrangements -- for freeboard assignment, have been included in a new LL3/Circ.130. 7.9

Damage Control Plans

To provide the masters of passenger and cargo ships with a basis for decision making to effectively mitigate and reduce the risk of the ship’s loss of stability in the event of flooding, the Committee approved guidelines for the development of damage control plans and booklets as contained in MSC/Circ.919. The Circular recommends that information be provided clearly showing the extents of watertight compartmentation and weathertight integrity as well as operational and precautionary measures to take to mitigate the effects of damage flooding. 7.6

Model Loading and Stability Manual

The Committee approved MSC/Circ.920 which contains a model format of information to be provided to the ship’s master. The information is categorized into three areas: operational guidance, essential technical information on the ship’s characteristics; and reference material on which the technical information has been developed. The guidance is established to satisfy regulation II-1/22 of SOLAS, regulation 10 of the Load Line Convention and regulation III/10 of the Torremelinos Protocol. 7.8
