International Regulation News Update
January 2001

GAS AND CHEMICAL CARRIERS

Cargo Hose Testing

Resolutions MSC.102(73) and MSC.103(73) require cargo hoses, including their end-fittings, installed on board chemical and gas carriers on/after 1 July 2002 to be prototype tested at normal ambient temperatures.

After testing with at least 200 pressure cycles from zero to twice the working pressure, the results should demonstrate the capability to withstand a bursting pressure of at least 5 times the maximum working pressure at the extreme service environment.

Resolutions MSC.106(73) and MSC.107(73) contain similar amendments for existing ships to the Chemical and Gas Codes. WP/19

Emergency Shutdown Valves

The newly adopted regulations to the IGC Code, contained in resolution MSC.103(73), clarify that, for gas carriers built on/after 1 July 2002, the measurement of the 30 second time limit from manual or automatic initiation to final closure of emergency shutdown valve is to include the signal response time in addition to valve closure time. However, closure actuators and mechanisms are to avoid surge pressure in the pipeline while smoothly cutting off product flow. WP.19
