OPENING
REMARKS
The
73rd Session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) met
from 27 November – 6 December 2000 in London. After delivery
of the opening statements by the Secretary General William A. O’Neil
concerning a number of proactive initiatives taken by IMO concerning
the safety of large passenger ships and of substandard oil tankers,
the Contracting Governments proceeded to review and adopt numerous
sets of amendments to the 1974/78 SOLAS Convention and the 1988
SOLAS Protocol, which are scheduled to enter into force on 1 July
2002, and issued several new sets of guidelines as summarized below.
