Reg XII/1: Definitions

This regulation contains definitions of terms used within the chapter and which are needed to determine the extent of its application.

The definitions used by IACS and in the SOLAS requirements differ with respect to:

  • definition of ship length: SOLAS uses the length as defined in the 1966 Load Line Convention and shown on the Load Line Certificate. IACS uses “Rule” length. The differences between the two definitions are generally small, with the SOLAS length being slightly larger, and therefore encompassing more ships, than the IACS definition.

  • how new and existing ships are distinguished for application of requirements. IACS uses the date of the contract for construction between builder and owner while SOLAS uses the keel-laying date (or date of similar stage of construction).
